ReVision Mission Study
Approved by Session May 31, 2007

Introduction:
In Fall 2006, the First Presbyterian Church of Racine began a Vision and Mission study to assist in our search for a new head pastor. More importantly, we have come to understand the process as a refocusing of the congregation’s mission. This study involved a congregation-wide survey with over 80% participation, based on attendance, and a series of eight weekly sessions by seven small groups, which had over 50% participation. Through these in-depth and comprehensive sessions we have updated our mission context, vision and mission statement, and three-year plan, with short-term goals.

Beliefs:
We believe in God the creator of all, who calls us to stewardship of God’s creation. Unity with God is our goal, and the Bible is our greatest resource. We believe that Jesus Christ is the foundation of our faith. Following the example of Jesus Christ’s ministry leads us to be peacemakers, beginning within our own congregation, and our local and global community, as we listen to, accept, and respect all people. Following Jesus Christ, we are led to be a people who reach out to minister, care, and support others through cooperation, forgiveness, repentance, tolerance, understanding, communication, and love. We are strengthened by being a community of Christian believers. We believe that the Holy Spirit leads us to witness to all. By teaching and by example, we invite others to join us in our faith journey.

Mission Context:
Founded in 1839 First Presbyterian Church of Racine is located in the oldest public building in Racine, and is on the National List of Historic Buildings. A $2,000,000 renovation in 1998 demonstrated our intentional commitment to our downtown location. Since this renovation, our worship attendance reached a high of 240 in 2002 and has steadily declined. Currently, our membership is 430 and average worship attendance is 165. We take pride and comfort in our history and traditions including involvement in the Underground Railroad and the Abolitionist Movement. We have continued to foster social initiatives resulting in viable, stand-alone programs such as health care for the uninsured, homeless ministries, and food programs. Our congregation supports many mission projects both financially and through direct participation. As partners in ministry with the community, we want to be more creative in our programming by offering alternative forms of worship, fellowship, education, and outreach.

Our church is located in a downtown neighborhood three blocks from Lake Michigan and adjacent to county and city government buildings, several other churches and a recognized historic district. Faced with the challenges of an urban environment, we are led to positively interact with our diverse immediate neighbors with an increasingly classic urban split between rich and poor, some who struggle with the issues of poverty, unemployment, educational opportunities and crime, and others, who live in newly constructed condominium developments just to our north, and middle class neighbors just south of us. While our congregation expresses high levels of lifestyle satisfaction, we recognize the opportunities to do God’s work in our immediate neighborhood. Members of our congregation participate in and provide leadership to numerous community organizations.

Located midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, Racine has a metropolitan population of 138,000. Racine offers cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities including a beautiful marina, a revitalized downtown with an art district, and museums. Racine has a large public school district, as well as a number of parochial and private schools. Three higher education institutions are located in the area.

Vision and Mission Statement:
We are a community of Christ’s faithful witnesses seeking to live the journey of God’s purpose.

Unity with God is our goal.
Jesus Christ’s life is our inspiration.
The Holy Spirit is our guide.
The Bible is our greatest resource.
The church is our visible, sustaining Fellowship.
The city of Racine and beyond is our
opportunity to minister to all in need of
                     God’s healing presence.
Together we seek to grow in our understanding of the true nature of God and the way of life taught by Jesus Christ. We desire to:
